Ponce, La Parguera |

We had breakfast at the hotel in Ponce and then set off on foot to see the city. We visited the local Ponce History Museum, then took a trolley ride around the city, and then set off in the afternoon to the little seaside fishing village of La Parguera. This was probably our favorite stop of the trip! We got to our hotel and had some fun at the pool (as usual) as we rested, had some great home-cooked meals (the hotel is family-owned) and the next morning we went snorkeling! It was truly awesome. The weather was great, blue skies and blue water. After our morning excursion we were able to take it easy after lunch in the afternoon. We had our yummy dinner and got ready foro our second snorkeling excursion, but this time it would be an evening excursion! We took a boat out to a special location far from the mainland so it was very dark, but we noticed a funny glow in the water as we approached the area we were going to snorkel in. We noticed the water churning behind the boat was getting more fluorescent-looking as we kept going forward. Then, we stopped. We put on our gear and dove into the water and noticed how the water glowed as we disturbed it! This is called a bioluminescent bay where there exist certain microorganisms in the water that glow when disturbed. There are very few places like this left anywhere and this was one, and the waters near Vieques Island is another place. The water helped us float because it was so salty as well. It was a remarkable, unforgettable experience and it was the best culminating event of the trip! |
