Green
Meadow welcomes volunteer help and there are many ways to contribute your
services either at home or in school. We hope the following descriptions of
various volunteer activities are useful when considering how you might like
to help.
Please call 1-978-897-8246 for any additional information.
There are many ways to be involved through volunteer jobs done at home.
Most are done on an as needed, flexible schedule. The following gives an
overview of the most common kinds of requested help.
Teacher Support Services - This includes work such as making book
covers (we provide training and material), printing charts, artwork, typing.
Jobs vary according to individual teachers needs and requests.
Baking - This might be for classroom parties, meetings,
fundraisers or school events.
Phoning - The Parent Group frequently needs help phoning to
recruit helpers for events; the Green Meadow office may need help notifying
parents in certain emergency situations.
Typing/Posters/Newsletter - The school staff and Parent Group need
help publicizing school events. Tasks may include writing, typing, artwork,
and posting materials in different locations.
Teachers and the Parent Group need volunteers that can help during school
hours. Some of the work requires a regular, weekly time commitment, while
other jobs are on an occasional basis. Each of the activities described
below indicate time commitments as regular or occasional.
Room Parent - (School year) - The primary purpose of the
"Room Parent(s)" would be for telephoning, but each teacher can
decide exactly what role the room parent will play in the classroom (for
emergency contact, organizing parties, chaperones, etc.)
Classroom Help - (Regular or occasional) - The use of volunteers
in the classroom is determined by each teacher. Activities vary according to
each teacher's needs. Classroom help frequently involves working with
children individually or in small groups.
Library - (Regular) - The librarian trains volunteers to assist in
the library shelving books, checking books in and out, covering and
repairing books, entering new books into circulation, etc....This job
requires a commitment to a regular schedule. The library is a wonderful
resource serving over 600 students, the more work done by volunteers the
more time Ms. Cranson has for teaching our children.
Art Room - (Regular and Occasional) - Ms. Santillo appreciates
ongoing or occasional help sorting recyclables, mounting, and hanging
artwork, cleaning, etc. Extra help is always needed for art exhibits and
special events.
Music Room - (Regular and Occasional) - Mrs. Koptiev appreciates
help passing out music and encouraging appropriate concert behavior during
chorus rehearsals and performances, and help with props at concerts. She
sometimes needs accompanists and people interested in dance for special
projects.
Support Services - (Regular and Occasional) - Teachers, office
staff and the Parent Group need help copying, collating, laminating,
cutting/pasting, etc. Training on machines provided.
Fluoride - (Regular) - The fluoride program is dependent upon
volunteers who can come in regularly on a Wednesday and deliver fluoride to
students. The nurse organizes the program and we try to have enough coverage
so that each volunteer only has to come in once a month.
Assist with Enrichment Events - (Occasional) - Volunteers needed
to help in school during school hours with the visiting artist program.
Involves setup, clean up, and some child supervision.
Auction -
Holiday Shoppe - A favorite of most everyone! The holiday
shop provides all the children in Green Meadow the chance to shop for their
families in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Parents donate small items; they
are all priced in the $.50 to $3.00 range. Volunteers are needed to
organize, price, and wrap the gifts as well as to help the children shop.
Family Fun Night -
Book Fair - Run during the fall open house, all proceeds
from this event go to the library. The librarian organizes the event and
volunteers are needed to set up, help children find books and to cashier.
Magazine Drive - The Magazine Drive is our single largest
fund-raiser. Help is needed to get packets of information together and to
collect and tally orders. Our current co-coordinator will be leaving Green
Meadow next year, and she would like an assistant to "train" for
future years.
T-Shirt Sale - The Parent Group offers a chance to purchase
sportswear with a Green Meadow insignia on it. Help is needed to take
orders, work with the vendor, tally orders, and arrange deliveries.
General Mills Boxtops - Parents are asked to collect Box tops from
specified General Mills products, which are then redeemed for cash. We
receive 10¢ for each Box top collected. Help is needed on a monthly basis
to advertise, collect and tally Box tops. Internet access is a plus, since
there are many special offers that are available through the "Box
Tops" website.

Schoolpop.com - A fundraising website through which you access
over 300 other online stores. A percentage of your purchase is
refunded to Green Meadow at no additional cost to you.

Photography - Some teachers request that class projects or events
be photographed. Translating Sometimes teachers need help from parents to
translate for a child or family. This is an on-call job and can often be
done at home or via telephone.
Carpentry/Woodwork - Parents with woodworking skills are needed
occasionally to help with special projects.
Computer Access/Expertise - Different requests arise from teachers
and the Parent Group for computer help with typing, data entry, graphics,
desktop publishing, and Internet access.
Other - If you have any special talents or hobbies you would be
willing to share with the school, please specify them on the volunteer form.
Enrichment Committee - This is a group of volunteers that meet
throughout the year. They work with the teachers to find programs for each
grade level that will supplement the curriculum. The Enrichment Committee
receives its budget from the PTO and seeks additional funding from other
sources such as grant writing.
Publicity - Different events during the year need publicity. We
need people to write about activities, contact the media, or distribute
flyers as the need arises. Much of this can be done at home.
Volunteers - The PTO generates a database of volunteers who
respond to the volunteer forms sent out at the beginning of the school year.
The Volunteer Coordinator maintains this database and helps recruit
volunteers in response to school needs.
Landscaping - Develop and maintain the grounds with appropriate
plantings.
