A Tale of Two Ponds
The tale of two ponds began with the Tobin
school in Cambridge receiving a science grant from the Toyota
foundation for $10,000. They
had to compare a city pond with a suburban pool site.
Mr. Steven Deflorio from Massachusetts Audubon Society, Habitat Education
Center and Wildlife Sanctuary was assisting the Tobin Teachers in the project.
Since he is a Maynard resident, he asked if 3 second-grade teachers at Green
Meadow would volunteer to be part of his program.
Gail Mara, Susan McNamara and Ellen Jaffe-Zeller were able to participate
in this fantastic experience.
Every month Mr. Deflorio came into the classrooms and taught the children
amazing things. Some of the topics
include: vernal pool identification, how rivers are formed, digging for fossils,
experiments with animals from the vernal pool and much more.
Although the year is over, you can support additional vernal pool activities for this year by purchasing a poster that the students designed for $12 on Animals We Can Find In Our Vernal Pool. The poster is shown below. Contact the Green Meadow Office at 978-897-8246.
(Additional donations can bring Mr. Deflorio back with his programs to teach us
more about nature. Also proposals
for additional grants have been submitted
with the hope that the program can continue.)
